Doku Terms of Service

Thank you for using Doku! Doku is a place to watch AI-made short dramas, discover story ideas, and, for eligible users, play with story.

Doku is operated by Kuma Stories Ltd. ("Doku," "we," "us," or "our"). These Terms apply to the Doku mobile apps, website, streaming experience, AI-assisted tools, idea board, voting, community features, and related services (together, the "Service"). Our Privacy Notice explains how we handle personal information. An app-store license and our End User License Agreement may also apply to the app itself.

By creating an account or, if you use Doku without an account, before you first use an interactive feature for which acceptance is required, you agree to these Terms by tapping the acceptance button shown to you. The Terms were also shown to you when you log in or create your account. However, if you do not agree, please do not use those features. Each time you use Doku’s story-publishing feature, any additional confirmation presented at that time applies to the material you choose to share through that feature.

1. Who can use Doku

You must be at least 13 years old to use Doku and must meet any higher minimum age required where you live.

You must be at least 18 years old (or the age of legal majority in your jurisdiction) to use Doku’s AI creation or story-publishing features, unless Doku expressly allows you to do so with the consent of your parent or legal guardian. If you are under 18 and you are to use those features, your parent or legal guardian must consent to your use of those features and to the provisions of these Terms that apply to material shared through Doku’s story-publishing feature. If you are a parent or legal guardian permitting a minor to use the story-publishing feature, you acknowledge and agree that any act of publishing a Submission by the minor shall constitute your explicit consent, on behalf of both yourself and the minor, to the exclusive licenses set forth in Section 5 and the ownership and irrevocable assignment of rights set forth in Section 6, as well as any provisions concerning payment, royalties, and revenue sharing.

You must provide accurate age information and must not misrepresent your age or otherwise bypass any age-based restriction. If you are 18 or older, by using an age-restricted feature, you represent and warrant that you have the legal capacity and authority necessary to use that feature and to grant the rights described in these Terms. If you are under 18, your use of such age-restricted features is strictly subject to the prior explicit consent of your parent or legal guardian as required by Doku.

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Doku may rely on the age information and representations you provide unless applicable law requires additional age assurance or consent. If we learn or reasonably believe that you do not meet an applicable age requirement, or that any required parental or guardian consent has not been obtained, we may restrict or terminate your access, remove or disable affected content, suspend any use or development of material shared through the story-publishing feature, and require additional information, consent, or documentation before taking further action.

2. Your account

Most Doku features require an account to work, although some parts of Doku may work without one. Keep your login information and devices secure, and give us accurate account information. You are responsible for activity under your account unless the law says otherwise.

Do not impersonate someone else, buy or sell accounts, use another person’s login without permission, or create a new account to get around a suspension or ban. Tell us promptly if you think someone has accessed your account without permission.

3. AI features

Doku designs the story tools and sets the creative framework in which they work. The tools use Doku’s own systems and third-party AI and media tools. Depending on the feature, you can type, speak, upload, or select material for those tools (your "Inputs"), and Doku’s tools may return AI-generated text results ("Outputs"). An Output does not become a Submission just because it is generated. If you choose to publish an Output through Doku’s story-publishing feature, the version published, whether unchanged or adjusted using Doku’s editing options, is a “Submission.”

Only provide material you have the right to use. Do not submit someone else’s private information, confidential material, copyrighted work, name, likeness, voice, or other protected material unless you have permission or another lawful basis to do so.

AI can be surprising. Outputs may be wrong, incomplete, offensive, similar to something generated for someone else, or not suitable for publication. We do not promise that an Output is unique, protectable, or free of third-party rights. Review an Output before you publish or share it.

To the extent permitted by law, you keep the rights you may have in your Inputs. Additional terms apply to Submissions under Section 5 and to Doku Productions (see Section 6).

4. Your everyday Content

"Your Content" means profile information, comments, posts, uploads, and other material you provide to Doku outside the story-publishing feature. You keep whatever rights you may have in Your Content. You give Doku a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, format, transmit, display, moderate, and distribute Your Content as reasonably needed to run, secure, improve, and provide the Service according to the features and visibility settings you use.

That operating license normally ends when Your Content is deleted from our systems, except for backup copies, legal or safety records, material already shared with others in a way we cannot reasonably undo, and de-identified information. We will handle personal information under our Privacy Notice.

5. Ideas and storylines: a space for inspiration

Doku offers a community idea board where eligible users can share Submissions for other users to view or vote on. Doku may choose some Submissions with more votes to develop into short-form shows.

5.1 Submissions and Doku Productions

A Submission and a Doku Production created by Doku are different things. To the extent permitted by law, you keep whatever rights you may have in your Submission, subject to the rights you grant Doku under Section 5.2. If Doku decides to develop a Doku Production based on or inspired by your Submission, the resulting Doku Production is governed by Section 6.

5.2 Permission you give Doku

5.2.1. Base Non-Exclusive License & Exclusive Hold Period. For each Submission, immediately upon your publishing thereof, you grant Doku a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, fully paid-up, royalty-free, transferable, and sublicensable non-exclusive license to use, reproduce, copy, store, edit, modify, adapt, translate, combine, create derivative works from, display, perform, publish, promote, and advertise the Submission, in whole or in part, in any media or format now known or later developed, to the fullest extent permitted by law.

In addition, you grant Doku an exclusive, irrevocable option (the "Exclusive Option") for a period of one hundred and twenty (120) days from the date of such publishing (the "Option Period") to exclusively develop, produce, finance, distribute, monetize, commercialize, and otherwise exploit the Submission (the "Exclusive Commercial Rights"). During the Option Period, you may not grant to any third party, or exercise yourself, any right that would conflict with the Exclusive Option or Doku's Exclusive Commercial Rights.

5.2.2. Exercise or Expiration of the Exclusive Option. Doku may exercise the Exclusive Option at its sole discretion at any time during the Option Period by notifying you or by commencing the development, production, or commercialization of the Submission. If Doku exercises the Exclusive Option, the Exclusive Commercial Rights shall immediately vest in Doku on a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, fully paid-up, royalty-free, transferable, and sublicensable basis, and you shall not thereafter grant to any third party, or exercise yourself, any right that conflicts with Doku’s exclusive rights.

If Doku does not exercise the Exclusive Option prior to the expiration of the Option Period, the Exclusive Option shall expire. Upon such expiration, Doku shall permanently retain the non-exclusive license granted in the preceding paragraph, but you shall thereafter be free to independently develop, commercialize, or license the Submission to third parties, provided such actions do not infringe upon Doku's continuing non-exclusive rights.

5.2.3. Included Contributions & Ongoing Discretion. The licenses and rights granted under this Section include any rights you may have in human-authored material from your Inputs, permitted edits, or other contributions that is included in, reproduced in, incorporated into, or otherwise forms part of the Submission.

Doku may exercise these rights itself or through its affiliates. Doku may decide, in its sole discretion, whether, when, and how to review, select, develop, produce, distribute, license, monetize, or otherwise exploit any Submission, and Doku has no obligation to use or develop any Submission. The rights granted under this Section continue even if you later delete the Submission, close your account, or stop using Doku, subject to any rights that cannot legally be waived or made irrevocable.

5.3 If Doku selects your Submission

You do not have to use the story-publishing feature. If Doku selects your Submission, Doku may, but is not required to, develop it into a Doku Production.

If Doku decides to develop your Submission, we may use our own technology, computing resources, personnel, and creative judgment in the development, editing, production, release, and distribution process. Any resulting Doku Production is governed by Section 6.

Unless Doku separately agrees with you in writing, you are not entitled to any payment, royalty, revenue share, accounting, approval right, or other compensation for a Submission or because Doku uses, develops, produces, distributes, licenses, monetizes, or otherwise exploits your Submission or any Doku Production based on it.

From time to time, we may offer creator programs, contests, prizes, bonuses, or other opportunities under separate rules. If we do, those rules will explain what applies.

5.4 Submissions are not confidential

Please do not send us a secret. Submissions are not confidential, and providing a Submission to Doku does not create a confidential, fiduciary, agency, employment, partnership, or other special relationship between you and Doku. Do not submit material that belongs to an employer, client, friend, studio, publisher, or anyone else unless you have permission to use it this way.

5.5 Similar ideas happen

Doku receives many ideas. We also develop ideas ourselves, work with other creators, and use AI systems. Two stories can share a premise, character type, twist, setting, title, theme, or other feature without one having come from the other.

Doku may already be working on, may later independently develop, or may receive from someone else material that is similar or even identical to part of your Submission. Similarity by itself does not necessarily mean Doku used your Submission.

Except for rights you have under a separate written agreement signed by Doku, you agree not to bring a claim against Doku or its affiliates based only on the fact that material Doku or its affiliates create, receive, develop, produce, or distribute is similar or identical to all or part of your Submission. This includes claims framed as idea theft, misappropriation, breach of an implied or implied-in-fact contract, breach of confidence, unjust enrichment, quantum meruit, or unfair competition. This does not limit any rights you may have under these Terms, a separate written agreement signed by Doku, applicable copyright law, or any right or claim that cannot legally be waived.

5.6 Your promises about your Submission

For each Submission, you promise that you have all rights and permissions needed to provide it to Doku and to give Doku the rights described in these Terms, and that Doku’s permitted use of your Submission will not infringe or violate another person’s intellectual property, privacy, publicity, or other rights. Submissions must also comply with the Community and Safety Rules in Section 10.

5.7 Deleting an idea

You may be able to remove a Submission from your profile or the public idea board. Removing it stops future public display when reasonably practicable, but it does not undo rights already granted to Doku, work already done, a Doku Production already released or in development, or rights Doku already granted to another party.

6. Doku Productions

A “Doku Production” is a show, episode, clip, trailer, script, recording, artwork, character depiction, visual, audio track, subtitle, translation, edit, or other production material that Doku develops, commissions, finances, or produces, whether based on a Submission, an internal idea, or another source.

As between you and Doku, Doku exclusively owns all right, title, and interest, if any, in and to each Doku Production and the production assets Doku creates, including scripts, video, audio, artwork, character depictions, edits, related versions, sequels, prequels, spin-offs, remakes, translations, and adaptations.

If you acquire or are found to have any right, title, or interest in a Doku Production because of your Submission or other contribution, you hereby irrevocably assign to Doku all such right, title, and interest to the fullest extent permitted by law. To the extent any such right cannot be assigned, you grant Doku an exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, fully paid-up, royalty-free, transferable, and sublicensable license to exercise that right in any manner and for any purpose, including to make, reproduce, adapt, modify, distribute, display, perform, license, sublicense, sell, promote, advertise, monetize, commercialize, and otherwise exploit the Doku Production.

Doku may exercise these rights itself or through others, without further approval or consent from you and without payment, royalty, revenue share, or other compensation unless Doku separately agrees with you in writing.

7. Sharing Doku shows

We want you to share what you enjoy. Doku may provide share buttons, clips, embeds, watermarks, or other tools for personal, non-commercial sharing. You may use Doku Productions only through those tools and only within the permissions we provide.

Unless Doku gives you written permission, you may not sell, license, monetize, re-upload as your own, strip watermarks from, or use a Doku Production to build or train a competing product or service.

8. Credits and creator opportunities

If Doku develops your Submission into a Doku Production, Doku may, but is not required to, connect it to your Doku profile or display a credit such as “Story idea by [username].”

Any credit is optional and may vary in wording, placement, size, duration, or availability. Doku may change, remove, or correct a credit when reasonably necessary. A credit does not affect ownership of the resulting Doku Production or create any right to payment, royalties, or revenue sharing.

Sometimes a great community idea can lead to a deeper collaboration. If you would like to pitch a larger project or explore a separate creator relationship with Doku, you may contact us using the Creator inquiries contact listed in Section 21. We may choose whether to discuss or enter into any separate arrangement, and any such arrangement must be in a separate written agreement signed by Doku.

9. Moral rights and similar rights

To the extent permitted by law, you waive and agree not to assert moral rights, rights of attribution, rights of integrity, or similar rights in your Submission, but only as needed for Doku and its partners to exercise the rights granted under these Terms. Where those rights cannot be waived, you agree not to use them to block a use that these Terms otherwise allow, to the extent the law permits.

10. Community and safety rules

Use Doku like a normal person sharing a creative space. Do not use the Service to create, request, upload, post, share, or vote on material that is illegal or that seriously harms other people.

We may use automated systems and human review to enforce these rules. We may refuse a generation request, reduce visibility, remove content, preserve evidence, restrict features, suspend or close accounts, and report conduct when reasonably necessary for safety, legal compliance, or enforcement. Reporting and appeal options may be available in the app or through the Safety contact listed in Section 21.

11. Doku’s service and intellectual property

Doku and its licensors own the Service and Doku materials, including the app, software, brand, interface, licensed content, Doku Productions, and production assets, except for material that these Terms expressly say remains yours.

We give you a personal, limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the Service as intended. All rights not expressly granted are reserved. Do not reverse engineer the Service, bypass technical limits, scrape or copy it at scale, use automated access without permission, or use Doku materials to build a competing service except where the law gives you a right that cannot be restricted.

Third-party services, app stores, login providers, AI providers, sharing services, and devices may have their own terms. Those terms may apply to your use of their products.

12. Reporting your concerns

If you believe material on Doku infringes your rights, please send our Designated Agent a notice that complies with applicable law using the rights-notice contact information listed in Section 21. We may ask for more information if a notice is incomplete.

Doku may remove or restrict allegedly infringing material and may terminate repeat infringers in appropriate circumstances. For copyright notices and counter-notices, we will follow applicable law.

13. Ads, promotions, and third-party links

Doku may be supported by advertising and may show ads, sponsored material, promotions, or links near or around content. Unless we expressly say otherwise, Doku does not endorse third-party products or services and is not responsible for third-party websites, apps, purchases, or policies.

If you participate in a promotion, contest, creator program, or other special feature, separate rules may apply. If those rules conflict with these Terms for that feature, the special rules control for that feature.

14. If something goes wrong

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available” to the extent permitted by law. We do not promise that Doku will always be available, uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or free from unauthorized access, security incidents, or data loss, or that every AI Output or piece of user content will be accurate, lawful, or suitable for every purpose. Nothing in these Terms takes away a warranty, remedy, privacy right, or consumer right that the law does not let us exclude.

To the extent permitted by law, Doku and its affiliates will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, exemplary, punitive, or consequential damages, or for lost profits, lost or corrupted data, lost opportunities, or business interruption arising from the Service, including from outages, errors, security incidents, or unauthorized access.

TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE TOTAL LIABILITY OF DOKU AND ITS AFFILIATES FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THE SERVICE OR THESE TERMS WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) US $100 OR (B) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID DIRECTLY TO DOKU FOR THE SERVICE DURING THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM. THIS CAP APPLIES REGARDLESS OF THE LEGAL THEORY OF THE CLAIM, EXCEPT WHERE THE LAW DOES NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION.

15. Your responsibility for what you submit

To the fullest extent permitted by law, you will defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Doku and its affiliates from and against any third-party claim, demand, action, loss, liability, damage, judgment, settlement, cost, or expense (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising out of or relating to (a) material you submit or contribute to Doku, (b) your breach of these Terms or the promises you make in them, or (c) your violation of another person’s rights or applicable law.

If you are under 18 years of age (or the age of legal majority in your jurisdiction), you may only use Doku with the permission of a parent or legal guardian. If you are a parent or legal guardian permitting a minor to use Doku, you agree to be bound by these Terms on the minor's behalf, and you personally agree to assume full and direct financial responsibility and fully defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Doku in accordance with this Section for any claims, breaches, or violations of law or third-party rights arising out of or relating to the minor’s use of Doku.

Doku may control the defense and settlement of any covered claim, and you agree to reasonably cooperate. You may not settle a covered claim in a way that imposes liability, an admission, or an obligation on Doku without Doku’s prior written consent. This section does not require you to indemnify Doku for a claim caused solely by Doku’s own conduct unrelated to your breach.

16. Suspension, account closure, and deletion

You may stop using Doku at any time. You may request account and data deletion as described at Account and Data Deletion and in our Privacy Notice.

We may restrict or close an account for material or repeated violations of these Terms, fraud, legal or safety risk, misuse of the Service, attempts to bypass enforcement, or threats to Doku or other users. Where appropriate or required by law, we will provide notice or an appeal option.

Closing an account ends your license to use the Service. Sections that by their nature need to continue will survive, including the rights already granted for Submissions and Doku Productions, ownership provisions, disclaimers, liability limits, dispute terms, and any obligations relating to past use.

17. Time limit for claims

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, any claim arising out of or relating to these Terms, the Service, your use of Doku, any Submission, or any Doku Production must be commenced within one year after the claim accrues. This limitation does not apply where applicable law does not permit the applicable limitations period to be shortened.

18. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, except that the Federal Arbitration Act and federal arbitration law govern the interpretation and enforcement of the arbitration agreement below. This choice of law does not take away any mandatory consumer protection that applies to you under applicable law.

Before starting arbitration, you and Doku agree to give the other side written notice of the dispute and a reasonable opportunity to resolve it informally. This does not prevent either side from seeking urgent temporary or injunctive relief where necessary to protect intellectual property, confidential information, security, or safety.

Except for an eligible individual claim in small-claims court and the requests for court relief described above, any dispute, claim, or controversy arising out of or relating to the Service, these Terms, a Submission, or a Doku Production will be resolved by binding individual arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association (“AAA”) under its Consumer Arbitration Rules then in effect. The arbitrator may award on an individual basis the same remedies that would be available in court, subject to these Terms and applicable law. Information exchange in arbitration will be limited to what the arbitrator determines is reasonably necessary and proportionate for the parties to fairly present their claims and defenses.

YOU AND DOKU AGREE THAT EACH MAY BRING CLAIMS AGAINST THE OTHER ONLY IN AN INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY AND NOT AS A PLAINTIFF OR CLASS MEMBER IN ANY PURPORTED CLASS, COLLECTIVE, CONSOLIDATED, OR REPRESENTATIVE PROCEEDING, TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.

IF ANY CLAIM PROCEEDS IN COURT RATHER THAN ARBITRATION, YOU AND DOKU WAIVE ANY RIGHT TO A JURY TRIAL TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.

Either party may bring an eligible individual claim in small-claims court. Doku may also seek temporary, preliminary, or injunctive relief in court to protect or enforce its intellectual property rights, confidential information, security, or the integrity of the Service. Unless applicable law requires otherwise, any court proceeding permitted under this Section must be brought in the state or federal courts located in Delaware, and you and Doku consent to the jurisdiction of those courts.

19. Changes to Doku or these Terms

Doku will keep evolving. We may add, change, suspend, or discontinue features. If we make a material change to these Terms, we will give you reasonable notice, such as by email or an in-app notice. We will ask you to accept the updated Terms when required by law or when the nature of the change warrants renewed agreement.

A new version of these Terms applies from its stated effective date. Rights already granted for a Submission or Doku Production remain in place to the extent described in the version that applied when the relevant submission or production activity occurred, unless the law requires a different result.

20. General terms

If Doku signs a separate written agreement with you about a Submission, Doku Production, creator program, or other project, that separate agreement controls if it conflicts with these Terms for that project.

If part of these Terms is found invalid or unenforceable, the rest remains in effect, and the affected part will be enforced to the maximum extent the law permits. Doku’s failure to enforce a provision once does not waive it later. You may not transfer your account or your obligations under these Terms without Doku’s permission. Doku may transfer these Terms as part of a merger, financing, reorganization, sale, or transfer of the Service or related business.
